Though agencies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/social-media-surveillance-us-government\">the State Department<\/a> have gathered millions of handles and monitored political discussions online, the Trump administration has been more explicit in who it\u2019s targeting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new, zero-tolerance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/03\/06\/state-department-ai-revoke-foreign-student-visas-hamas\">\u201cCatch and Revoke\u201d strategy,<\/a> which uses AI to monitor the public speech of foreign nationals and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stuartanderson\/2025\/05\/05\/rubio-makes-immigration-threat-to-revoke-student-h-1b-and-other-visas\/\">revoke visas<\/a> of those who \u201cabuse [the country\u2019s] hospitality.\u201d In a March press conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-remarks-to-the-press-3\/\">Rubio remarked<\/a> that at least 300 visas, primarily student and visitor visas, had been revoked on the grounds that visitors are engaging in activity contrary to national interest.
