Windows 11’s File Explorer Is Now Faster at Deleting Large Files

Microsoft is rolling out a targeted performance update for Windows 11 designed to resolve one of the platform’s most persistent storage annoyances: sluggish deletion of large, highly fragmented files.

The improvement is part of a broader set of File Explorer refinements currently undergoing testing with Windows Insiders before a general release.

File Explorer now handles file deletion routines significantly more efficiently in scenarios involving large and fragmented datasets.

Users who regularly handle sizable video files, virtual disk images, or massive databases have long faced sluggish delete operations, particularly when files are scattered across storage media in non-contiguous blocks.

This update directly optimizes the underlying file system routines to eliminate those deletion bottlenecks.

Alongside the deletion performance boost, Microsoft has bundled several additional File Explorer usability refinements:

• Faster Home Launch Times: Reduced latency when opening File Explorer Home.
• Touch Scrolling Support: Enhanced touch carousel navigation in the Recommended file section for touch-enabled hardware.

Windows 11 Speeds Up Large File Deletions

The preview update also delivers quality-of-life improvements across other core operating system components.

Desktop background persistence has been hardened when switching across multiple virtual desktops, resolving a longstanding bug where custom wallpapers would reset unexpectedly. Additionally, the Settings > Personalization > Background menu received cosmetic polish.

According to the official windows insider release notes, taskbar widgets are also receiving expanded support for animated icons, with dynamic content updates appearing more prominently for Insiders who have dashboard notifications enabled.

File Explorer responsiveness has remained a primary feedback item for Windows power users for years. Substantive performance gains targeting core file-management operations are relatively rare compared to cosmetic feature updates.

Security analysts and system administrators tracking OS releases note that storage management remains a crucial operational focus.

While Microsoft continuously tests performance wins, enterprise environments must also balance system stability, as documented during recent Windows 11 update issues affecting enterprise endpoints.

Additionally, administrative controls like the new Windows 11 security feature help prevent unprivileged local access to storage configurations during system maintenance.
